TEN SUNS EP
The journey of Ten Suns for some of the members spans ten years of growth, experience and friendship. Hamish Thompson’s solo project called The Hermit which quickly expanded to a full group with the help of some musicians he had known since high school. The sound is very electronic which has its place but through growing together as musicians felt that the music they are creating now didn’t necessary fit The Hermit style. After talking with Red the lead singer of Ten Suns (also a member of The Hermit for 3 years) I got the sense that everyone was on board for this change especially Hamish who also realized what they all had started together.
The songs on this self-titled Ep are wonderful and with all the new players in the band (a complete horn section and mini orchestra) it would seem easy for some of the sound to get lost in the recordings. But every one of the musicians were used to their advantage and just made everything flow. I asked Red about their writing style, she told me that all the songs are made collectively as a group like painting a collage.
My favorite song is Nature, the last track on the Ep and a great dance number. The great thing I like about this music is that anyone at any age can listen, dance and enjoy. The drum tracks were recorded at Baker Street and the rest at the Hovel which is Hamish’s recording studio described by Red as a peaceful place to play music. The second track All Together is a happy go lucky layered track with little bits of ska mixed in. The album was mixed by Howard Redekopp (Mother Mother, Tegan and Sara) who did an awesome job.
Ten Suns is planning on an end of summer tour and also playing a couple of special parties because of an auction at their fundraiser, so some lucky people have a couple of great shows to look forward to.
It goes to show you what happens when you put yourself out there and have the passion, drive and love for music!!
