The Pack a.d. – we kill computers
I had the distinct pleasure of having a jam space right next The Pack a.d., so I was able to hear the workings of this album in its infancy. What I heard was explosive rock. Like a good book I can’t put down, I can’t stop listening to this album. Becky Black (guitarist/vocals) and Maya Miller (drummer) have toured so much of North America that the beauty of these two countries has rubbed off on them and their new album. The first track is evident of this beauty, a song about deer and technology. All the tracks flow together beautifully, but it’s the raw sounds and insightful lyrics that I love about this album.
Their mix of blues and rock is made even better because they sing about more than relationships and break-ups; the human relationships with the people they meet on the road are more present in their music. My favourite track is “BC is on Fire,” which I can only imagine is about the forest fires in BC, which are often started by humans.
This album was recorded by Jesse Gander at Hive Studios, and mastered by Jim Diamond at Ghetto Recorders. It was recorded off the floor, which is the way all music should be recorded, because perfection is the imperfection of art. Becky Black was responsible for the album layout, and Maya Miller the text, another layer of talent on these women.
we kill computers makes me want to create art. I’ve never seen them live, but if their jam sessions are any indication of how they play, then I can’t wait for their CD Release Party on April 23rd at the Biltmore Cabaret. If you love dirty rock, join me there!
