RAISED BY APES with CAMBRIDGE, SLUSH and IMPEDERS OF PROGRESS at Pat’s Pub

A wonderful night of punk rock began with Impeders of Progress (listen on MySpace), who rocked everyone’s ass. If you’re new to playing shows, you should check out this band for pointers on how to be the first band on stage. IOP played a fast set with great energy, and they were direct and to the point in their songs and in between their songs. Karl the Red plays lead guitar, and he’s a giant on that stage. Sturdy Steve pounded out the vocals with precision, matched by Super Sojka on guitar, Rotty on bass and KristaFuh on drums. This band grabs you, slams you against the wall, and gives you no choice but to listen to what they have to say. That’s the way I like my punk rock.

Next was Slush, a punk band from Whistler who were melodic and fast. Adam Legett’s vocals remind me a bit of AFI, and the songs were tight. The drummer had a massive kit, taking up most of the corner of the stage. I don’t know if it was intended to be a joke or not, but Jamie Weatherbie did a great job behind it. After a while, the songs became repetitive and lost their appeal, but it is an amazing thing to be part of the scene for 10 years.

Cambridge was the next band to hit the stage, and they did so with great energy. They sound like a mix of Rise Against and New Found Glory, which I found very interesting. The crowd was really into this band, causing a microphone stand to be destroyed by a raucous pit. It was cool to see a lot of girls in the pit, pushing some of the big boys around. This just added fuel to Jesse LeBourdais‘s vocals and the band’s already great energy. I would give them a 6 on the punk-o-meter.

Last was Raised By Apes, who had a pennywise vibe about them and didn’t stray very far from that formula. The band’s energy definitely helped them as they went through their set. Raised by Apes has new album out, called Destination Nowhere, and is also doing a mini tour of the West Coast of the States. I must say, as punk shows go, this one was pretty standard, with the exception of Impeders of Progress and Cambridge. I’ve never understood why promoters make a musical line-up with bands who are quite similar to each other. How can a band pop out at you if the other acts sound similar or play similar music? I’m off my soap box for now, and on to the next show!
